The pH mechanism
Blood has a pH of 7.3–7.4. Your vaginal environment needs to stay below 4.5 to suppress odor-causing bacteria. Five days of menstrual blood raises pH enough to let those bacteria overgrow — and the smell follows. It usually self-corrects within 2–3 days.
When it's normal vs when it's BV
Normal: mild musty smell in days 1–3 post-period, clears on its own. BV: fishy or strong odor that persists past day 3–4, often with greyish discharge, sometimes with itching. The pattern-repetition (every single cycle, same smell, not clearing) is the BV tell.
Prevention for recurring post-period odor
A single dose of vaginal probiotic started on the last day of your period can pre-empt the pH rise. Boric acid suppositories used for 5–7 days immediately post-period are a standard protocol for recurrent BV — discuss with a clinician first.
